The Overwhelming Business Of Hiring An Attorney: Tips That Help

Posted on

Back when there used to be these things called "phone books," you would look up "attorneys" when you needed a lawyer. Some lawyers would take up ad space in the phone book that published the types of law they practiced. This was somewhat helpful if you already knew what kind of legal help you needed. These days, your internet searches are your phone book, and it does not help you with finding a lawyer. It returns too many options! Here are some tips that can help so that you do not spend hours trying to find and hire an attorney:

Look up "Attorneys Near Me" or "Law Firms Near Me"

You can either type the above phrases into a search engine or ask your A.I. assistant on your phone for help. You generally get the short list of about twenty or so contacts, although it could be much more if you live in a large city. From there, you can try to narrow it down to the types of law you think apply to your case.

When You Are Not Sure, Use a Descriptive Phrase to Narrow Things Down

Simply typing "involved in an accident" into a search bar is not going to help narrow things down for you. What type of accident was it? Did you slice your hand open at work, or did you get into a car accident with a truck? While all accidents that cause injury seem the same to you, they are not the same to all accident lawyers. You would actually call a truck accident lawyer for the latter incident and a workers' compensation lawyer for the former incident.

Every Lawyer You Decide to Call, Ask for Price First

The more experienced a lawyer is, and the higher up in a law firm he/she is, the more expensive your legal costs will be. If you call a law firm, you will get the receptionist or paralegal first. Before you ask to speak to a lawyer, find out if the receptionist/paralegal already knows what the lawyer charges.

If he/she does not, then you can try to speak to the lawyer if he/she is not in court at the moment. If the receptionist/paralegal knows what the lawyer charges for a retaining fee and hourly rate, jot it down then hang up. This way, you know exactly which lawyers charge what for their services, and you can hire the one you can afford.
